Angela's Project

Page history last edited by Angela Boccuzzi-Reichert 2 yrs ago

Goal

  • To use technology tools to make teacher's jobs easier and to further the teacher librarian's role as a leader in the school community.

Tools

  • Blogger - Created Booktalk a blog for the students of Merton Williams to discuss books.
  • PB Wiki - pbwiki is being used in a variety of ways.
      • Merton Williams Scheduling Wiki - this allows staff members to sign up for the library computer lab and library from the comfort of their own home. Starting the second semester the 7 mobile carts and the computer lab will be on the wiki. The wiki, to date has been succesful and has gotten positive feedback from staff members.
      • Techtoolz - Wiki that is going to electronicall share interesting tech tips with staff members . The first topic will be Delicious. My hope is after people use these tools they can add suggestions to the wiki.
  • Moodle -
    • Each year I facilitiate a course called Getting Acquainted with Young Adult Literature. This year the course will be done electronically using both Moodle and a wiki. The wiki, because of ease of use, will be used for the participants to respond to. This will also help to show them how easy it is to use! Moodle will be used to present the actual course work.

Steps

  • Set up accounts with pbwiki and Blogger
  • Create the content for each wiki and blog
  • Advertise using email (for staff), announcements and bookmarks for the student blog
  • For the staff development course, write a proposal and present it to our coordinator for approval.

Challenges

  • Greatest challenge is keeping everything straight and up to date
  • Advertising what is happening to the staff and students
  • Making it look easy so other people embrace the technology

Plan for follow through

  • The scheduling wiki is up and running, over the next few weeks I will begin adding the other carts and lab onto the wiki. My plan is to do a little at a time when there are students in the library for study hall. I'll take a laptop and sit amongst them so I am available to help with their questions, work or I hate to say it babysit when needed :)
  • Everytime a comment is made to booktalk an email will be sent to me which will force me to keep it up to date. Over the next few weeks I will be putting bookmarks in students books as they are checking them out and also be making announcements to the building. A thought of a contest related to the blog is rolling around in my mind....
  • Techtoolz at this point will be a monthly email of ideas. This will replace the newsletter I used to create for staff.

impressive project. The library scheduled looked neat. I just hope such a novel idea does not get used "for evil" (as Google founders often say, "Don't do evil"). I hate to say it, but sometimes too much information gets a bad rap--hopefully your culture will embrace this unique idea! Good Job. :)

This looks like a great way to use 2.0 technology to communicate with and instruct staff.

I tried to look at your booktalk blog but forgot that I would be blocked as I am in school. Do you get many students to participate? I like your ideas.

I think the bookmarks are a great marketing tool for the students. We use them at UH as well.

You have so many ideas here. Remember that is you feel one is lagging behind or being neglected, it is ok to refocus your efforts elsewhere if needed and shelf things for later. One good thing about much of this technology is that, while it does take time, it rarely costs a lot of money.
