Goal:
- To create a blog that can be used by the members of two books clubs (Gregor the Overlander and Redwall) that meet with me in the library during lunch. The blog will be used to elicit conversation on the days we do not meet as well as acting as a springboard for when we meet face to face.
Tools I will use to share, educate or implement including an explanation of what the tool is or does:
- I have already created the blog using Blogger. I was initially concerned with the fact that Blogger allows its users to hop towards other blogs so I removed the navigational bar, disallowing children to enter other areas.
A set of steps needed to accomplish the goal.
- Introduce the blog to the members of both book clubs and the principal
- Send a note home to parents describing the purpose of this blog and how it can benefit children as well as indicating the level of safety.
- Show the students how to create and add comments
Challenges that may be faced in implementing the goal and how I can overcome them
- At this time the only concern I have would be parents’ concern about safety. Hopefully this will be headed off at the pass by the parent letter.
Success examples from other libraries using the tool:
A plan for follow through and maintenance of the projects
I hope to not only follow through and maintain but to also introduce this tool to other teachers. Two great examples I will refer to are:

Susan,
Nice project! I am doing a similar page with my YA bookclub as part of my library webpage: http://www.fish4info.org/liv-j/node/8723. I will be keeping an eye on your blog for ideas!

From A. Gordon:
Looks great. I love the idea of the kids being able to continue the conversation even on days they don't meet with face-to-face. (And I loved Gregor the Overlander, too--bats! battles! cockroaches!)

Susan, Wonderful idea to get students writing about thier ideas and thoughts. They can do this evan if they are absent that day.

Susan, Cool project. I like the ways you've outlined to meet challenges. A blog is a cool way to get kids talking about what they've been reading. Great examples of other blogs too.

I think that you have thought very well through some of your challenges. The parent letter is a great idea. I hope that other people in this institute consider this as a way to foster parent support and involvement. I also think that the inclusion of User Guidelines is very important. Having rules and policies can be important both for your students and for yourself.
It would be interesting to see if you are able to use this in the future to actually advertise your reading clubs and bring new kids into the library. Great job.
