My name is Glenna Hinkson and I'm the Middle School Librarian or Media Specialist in Batavia.  I've been at the same school for 27 years...only 3 until retirement.  Growing up I really wanted to be a kindergarten teacher like my mom (she taught kndg. for 38 years) so I went to Geneseo and earned  my elem. education degree...after 3 years of substituting and not really finding an elementary position the then Junior High librarian retired and they needed someone.  That someone was me!  I went back to Geneseo to earn my Master's Degree (MLS) while working as a librarian.  I didn't think I would stay in Batavia, because I was born and raised there, but here I am after over half my lifetime still at the same job.  The junior high became a middle school after I had been there about 8 years and I think we are much better off.  I am constantly amazed by middle schoolers and how one day is never the same as the previous one and how much things have changed over the years!  About 10 years ago I became our Association President after being an active rep. for 10 years before that.  I loved doing that and found that it became two full-time jobs.  Now I am just the librarian/media specialist/computer go-to-for-help and fix-it person.  It's amazing how much I've learned about computers and what to do when something goes wrong.  For years it was just teachers calling to ask what book should they recommend or what encyclopedia could they find the answers in...and then "how do you run this VCR...I can't get a picture"...and somewhere along the line our person in charge of our Technology Department thought that the District librarians should be much more involved in the updating of our computers, etc. and that lead to what I do today.  I'm constantly being called to come and fix someone's computer or what database do I use or where can I find this information.  It's wonderful and keeps me so busy that the days fly by and I don't know where the time has gone...kinda like this online course...I believe I was supposed to start this last week!  Oh well...

Just a bit of personal info and then I'm done...I live in East Bethany, NY with my husband of almost 18 years (on Valentine's Day), Jim, my daughters, Alyssa, 16, a senior at Alexander CS (will be studying to be a secondary history teacher) and Kaleigh, 13, in 8th grade at Alexander...we have 2 Golden Retrievers, Bailee (7) and Maggee (3), our cat, Fatty (9) and a Guinea Pig (1).  I spend most of my time attending soccer games...yes...Alexander's Varsity is Division 1 champs this year and only one game away from being Class CC champs for the first time!  :) and driving to dance classes, basketball games and track events.  I play the piano and flute, downhill ski (I'm the middle school ski club advisor), cross-stitch and read when I have the time...although there's never enough of that! and I love to garden...we have almost 30 flower gardens around our house!  So, that's me in a nut-shell...I may be nearing retirement and looking forward to it but there's sooo much new stuff to learn about and that's why I'm doing the on-line course!
