Final Project: Social Software Tools

GOAL:

To establish a social library program model that allows for greater faculty/media specialist collaboration based around resource sharing and the development of a library media program portal.

TOOLS: (share, educate, implement…)
The model will focus on the development of a teacher resources blog  that sends feeds to teachers (via GoogleReader, email, etc) of updated resources and materials purchased by the library (eBooks, new database features, etc) as well as exemplar internet sources (Ultimately, teachers will be sent “customized feeds” based on the courses and curriculum they are teaching).

In addition, the blog will allow teachers to collaborate with collection development through a “book suggestions” tool within the blog. To help teachers use these new tools, instructional videos will be created and posted to the blog using Adobe—Captivate software (to capture and record screen activity while effortlessly synchronizing audio and video) allowing a means of sharing and educating. Meebo (IM) has been added to the blog to allow teachers to ask questions or share comments in real-time.

METHODOLOGY to accomplish your goal:
Wordpress is the blog platform presently being used. The following link takes you to the PHS Teachers Resource blog. http://phsteacherresouces.wordpress.com/

CHALLENGES:
Presently the blog is “open to the world” and we will monitor any potential problems (presently all comments added to the blog are sent to the blog administrator or moderator) prior to posting.

Maintenance/follow-through:
To create a sense of community and foster greater collaborative partnerships within the whole Library Media Program school-wide, the social networking tool Elgg or Ning will be beta-tested to help increase academic achievement and meet Information Literacy standards by acting as the “hub of the school”.

How long have you had this up? And what kind of response are you getting from it. It's really cool!

OVER ACHIEVER! :-) Must have had a gallon of coffee setting that thing up! Any chance you might offer a class to those of us out there who want to learn from your wisdom?

Nice job! I think in one of our weekly chats you mentioned using alot of widgets--but they all serve a good purpose. This would be a great way to revise the teacher newsletter, writing clips as new items come up rather than storing for the once-a-month email attachment. (But I still have teachers who only read the print copy.) Do many use the IM feature yet? It all looks great.

Yes, it is going better than I anticipated. In fact, I had a student in a computer lab on the other side of our large building(with the S.S. teacher present) IM me and ask if we had "any information on the Ottoman Empire and historical influence for Russia--I almost fell over! We did have information and the student arrived 5-minutes later with a pass from the S.S. teacher to sign out a book and help with the results from a database search. It was impressive and not expected at all! Who would ever figure...

Sue,
Shoot me an email sometime (glen_huot@penfield.monroe.edu) it really is easy and we could discuss it over the phone while on computers to get it set up for you. Thanks. Good luck.
Cheers,
Glen

The Meebo idea is fabulous, and so is the idea of constantly sharing information about new materials. Right now, our staff sees new materials only when I have a special display or event. And I'd comment on your Wordpress blog, but since I'm at school...it's blocked.

This is a great idea, wedding content that teachers want and can use with a technology you would like them to learn. For the tutorials, you could use something like Slideshare.net or Blip.tv to store them. I also like that you have incorporated Meebo Me into the blog. It is such an easy to implement tool. We are using it right now at my library.

Have you thought about licensing your tutorials with a Creative Commons license? This would allow other teachers to use the content you are creating as well.

Great job. I knew you were going to come up with something fabulous.
