PHS Library Wiki: The Virtual Librarian

Goal: The goal of the PHS library Wiki is to provide 24/7 access to resources and instructional tools to insure that the students and staff of PHS are efficient and effective users of ideas and information.

Tool:  I chose Wikispaces to host my Wiki because, as an educator, I have a free, noncommercial space.  The toolbar is relatively simple to use.  Upload and imparting files, images, and Widgets very user friendly

Steps:

  1. Register for Wikispaces (done).
  2. Begin designing space (done).
  3. Determine content, navigation, formats of information, etc., (in progress).

Challenges: While Wikispaces is relatively easy to use at a basic level, more sophisticated editing and format requires knowsledge of HTML and CSS, which, up until now, I have successfully avoided.

Successful examples:

http://teacherlibrarianwiki.pbwiki.com/

http://lmnet.wikispaces.com/

A plan for follow-through and maintenance of your project: I've got a couple of ideas for follow-through and maintenance.  First, I'll devote the same block of time each week for review, updates, etc to the Wiki (of course, if I need to do on the fly changes, I'll do them).  Secondly, I truly want this to be an interactive experience, so I plan to provide professional develop to staff and instruction to students.   I really like the concept of students creating pathfinders that Springfield Township uses. Paul, I love your ideas (along with Glen's--you two must have fun working together!) along with the wiki examples that you shared. I receive LM_NET postings daily, but had never looked at their wiki. Your Free Dictionary inclusions are great. Maybe you could work with a teacher to get them to have kids write book reviews? Good luck, it's a great beginning.

<<which, up until now, I have successfully avoided>>

This made me laugh.

This is a good idea and seems well thought out. I like that you have considered staff training. Have you thought about what incentives you might offer people who participate? Once they are trained and experienced, they could be your trainers or word of mouth marketers.
