Weekly Meeting Schedule ! Wiki Tutorial
We will talk more about the how and why of wikis in week 4. This tutorial is a simple how to so that you will be able to add content to this wiki and share things about yourself with your fellow students.
Terms to remember:
Wikis – a web page anyone can edit
Sandbox – a wiki term for a page on a wiki on which you can practice
First, watch this video from Common Craft on how to use wikis.
Things to remember about wikis:
- You can not break a wiki. Wikis save a history, so if you accidentally delete a page, delete content, or find that your wiki has been spammed, it is very easy to restore the wiki to its original state. Please remember this and feel free to experiment.
- Most wikis have a WYSIWIG (What You See Is What You Get). That means that the editing functions of wikis work very much like a Word document. The buttons are similar to Word buttons and they serve the same functions.
- Wikis are great for collaboration and creation of information. Have fun with this wiki. It is yours to add content to as you like. If you think of something you would like to know about your fellow participants that is not listed, make a page for it. If you want to create a page to collect resources, do it. There are no rules here.
- Feel free to play. This is your sandbox.
To begin:
Go to the page you want to change.
Click edit.
Make your changes.
Click save.
Viola! You just edited a wiki!
You can create a page a couple different ways:
You can click on create a new page in the Quick Start box. If you do this, you need to make sure that you place the link to your new page somewhere on the wiki so it can be found. Otherwise, it is just floating out in space.
You can also, go to the page you want your new page linked on. For instance, if you wanted to add your profile, you would go to the About Pages and type your name in the proper place in the lis. Highlight your name and click on the "link" button in the editing tool bar. The default is create a new wiki page. Click ok and save the wiki page. When you look at the page again, it should have your new page title underlined in red. Click on it, create your new page, and go.
